Kushinga - Mental Health in Zimbabwe

Forensic Mental Health

Our mental health systems study revealed several challenges within the forensic mental health system in Zimbabwe, including poor access to mental health care, difficult living conditions, and several policy and process issues that kept people with mental illness in prison longer than necessary.

These findings have led our organization to a broader exploration of prison mental health in LMICs, and especially in Africa. We have written commentary, performed a systematic review, and conducted a qualitative study on patient experiences within Zimbabwe’s prison system.
